TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

Metec Powder Metal AB has developed new processes to produce fully dense components from high purity gas atomized powders.

By using different process steps all types of steel and alloys can be processed from above said powder. The different patented process steps are called SCANPAC® MMS (Metec Multi Step).

All types of alloys has been produced from carbon steel , tool steel, high speed steel stainless steel and high nickel alloys. Also titanium and its alloys have been produced with good result.

The raw material gas atomized spherical powder is agglomerated and sieved in the SCANPAC® process in order to make it possible to press with good green strength in different tools. The pressed component is debinded and sintered/hipped to full density. The choice of process route is decided by the specific grade of steel or alloy.

A vital step is the restrike process i.e. second consolidation with High Velocity Compaction (HVC). Due to the adiabatic effect, restrike densities over 95 % can be reached. Due to the high density, capsule free hot isostatic pressing can be done, which gives excellent structures and full density. This step is called HVC-HIP.

All properties, mechanical, corrosion, welding etc. are as good as or better than corresponding wrought components. The SCANPAC® MMS components fulfill all corresponding standards as required also for pressure vessel applications.

The SCANPAC® MMS process is a GREEN process. Due to better material utilization and fewer process steps the energy savings per kilo component is substantial compared with conventional production.

The weight of the components that could be produced with the SCANPAC® MMS process are  between 50 grams to 5 000 grams.
